Detroit Lions sign S Kerby Joseph to contract extension through 2029 season
Allen Park, Mich. – The Detroit Lions announced today that they have signed S Kerby Joseph to a contract extension through the 2029 season.
Additional contract terms were not disclosed.
Joseph enters his fourth season with Detroit in 2025 after putting together a historical campaign last season.
In 2024, Joseph led the NFL with nine interceptions and became the first Lions safety to produce a season with nine interceptions and a pick-six since Jack Christiansen in 1957.
He also became the first Lions safety to be selected First-Team AP All-Pro since Yale Lary in 1962.
Originally entering the NFL as a third-round (97th overall) draft selection out of Illinois in 2022, Joseph has appeared in 49-career games (46 starts) and compiled 237 tackles (179 solo), 31 pass defenses, 17 interceptions and two forced fumbles. His 17 interceptions lead all NFL players over the last three seasons while his 31 pass defenses tie for the most among NFL safeties. He is also the NFL’s first safety to log at least four interceptions in each of the first three seasons of a player’s career since Ed Reed from 2002-04.

The Lions enter this year’s draft with seven picks available to them. Pick No. 28 will take place on Day 1 of the NFL Draft (here’s how to watch — and approximately when the pick may occur). Detroit has an additional two picks on Day 2: No. 60 in the second round, as well as pick No. 102 in the third. They hold another four picks on Day 3, including No. 130 in the fourth round, no picks in the fifth, No. 196 in the sixth round, as well as picks No. 228 and No. 244 in the seventh round.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes maintains a “best player available” approach to the NFL Draft, which gives Detroit a lot of different ways to go with their draft picks.
According to the folks at FanDuel Sportsbook, the odds favor the Lions selecting a defensive line/edge rusher (-190) with their first selection, followed by an offensive lineman (+210), cornerback (+1400), wide receiver (+1500), linebacker (+2200), and safety (+3800).
