In a press release issued in both English and Korean, LAFC said they will “make a major announcement” at the presser at 2 p.m. Wednesday at BMO Stadium, or 6 a.m. Thursday (South Korean time).

The press conference will stream live on LAFC.com and on the club’s social media channels — YouTube, Facebook and X.

All signs point to Son joining LAFC, following a 10-year run with Tottenham Hotspur.

Son left South Korea for Los Angeles on Tuesday, apparently to finalize his deal with the MLS club that has been in the rumor mill for weeks.

ESPN has reported that Son will join LAFC for a record transfer fee of around US$26 million.

The previous record had been the $22 million Atlanta United FC spent last winter to acquire forward Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Son, 33, played his final match for Tottenham in a preseason friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. He had announced the previous day that he would leave Spurs this summer.

Though he did not specify where he will play next, Son hinted at a move to the United States.

After weeks of being linked to LAFC, Son said he wanted to end up in a situation that could best help him prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Son ended his Spurs spell ranked fifth on their all-time scoring list with 173 goals in all competitions. He also captained Spurs to the UEFA Europa League title in May this year.

There are 30 clubs in MLS, 15 each in the Eastern and Western conferences. LAFC are in sixth place in the west with 36 points from 22 matches, and they have at least two games in hand on all five teams above them in the standings.

The regular season will be followed by the playoffs — different from most football leagues but similar to other sports leagues in North America.

The top seven teams in each conference qualify for the first round, and the teams finishing eighth and ninth will meet in the wild-card round, with the winner advancing to the first round.
