Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner is expected to return to RB Leipzig once his North London loan deal expires in June, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Lilywhites will reportedly not exercise the buy option to make Werner’s move permanent after the season amid a disappointing campaign for the Germany international.

Werner is expected to reassess his options once he returns to Leipzig this summer and could depart the Bundesliga club again, with his contract approaching its final 12 months.

The 29-year-old has been with Tottenham since January last year, scoring three goals and providing six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

Romano, writing on X, has revealed that Tottenham have already made a decision on Werner’s future, with the forward set to return to Leipzig once his loan finishes.

Werner has struggled for regular minutes under Ange Postecoglou this season, making just 10 starts across all competitions and 17 further appearances off the bench.

The 29-year-old, praised as ‘fantastic’, last started a Premier League game for Spurs on January 4, in the 2-1 loss against Newcastle, and has featured just once in the top flight since.

Tottenham have also yet to make a decision on Mathys Tel’s future at the club, having loaned him in from Bayern Munich in July.

The Lilywhites hold a €60m (£51m) option to make the Frenchman’s move permanent after the season, but are not guaranteed to do so, with their transfer plans now dependent on whether they qualify for Europe.
