‌Tommy Fleetwood drove short of the green on the par-4 5th into a pot bunker that still had footprints from the previous player in it. His ball fortunately avoided these indentations, but the 34-year-old,

being left-handed, had to stand close to this previously trampled area when playing his second shot.

‌It barely cleared the bunker after hitting the lip and left Fleetwood chipping onto the green, which went long. Then his 33-foot putt for par missed by two feet, meaning he bogeyed that hole after cleaning up in five.

Fleetwood addressed the incident afterwards. “It wasn’t a great rake job,” he said.

“But the first thing is, I was not very happy to be in there, so that’s my fault. But when things aren’t going well…

“It was like in somebody’s hitting mark that hadn’t really been raked great. I probably could have managed it better.”

‌Greenkeepers following each group have previously raked bunkers, but the R&A changed that this year, with the responsibility now falling on individual caddies. It is fair to say Fleetwood is not a fan.

“The amount that I hit in them today, I’m sure I was probably asking for the bunker-rakers back,” he said. “They’ve always had bunker-rakers until this week?

“I thought so. I thought that was odd.

“You don’t know what’s gone on before. I’m not going to hold it against anyone too much.

“I’m not going to get angry about anyone where you don’t know what’s happening, but it wasn’t great, and bunker rakers would have been nice.”

Fleetwood finished the first round two-over 72. The left him six strokes behind a five-way tie for the lead on four under.
