Alcaraz, who is seeded second at the French Open, is the reigning champion at the clay-court Grand Slam, having beaten Alexander Zverev in last year’s final.

The 22-year-old is widely seen as the favourite to defend his title after winning both the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open during a stellar clay season so far.

Sinner, the world No 1, confirmed his status as a leading French Open contender by finishing as a runner-up to Alcaraz in Rome — his first tournament in over three months.

The 23-year-old Italian achieved his best result at Roland Garros to date last year, when he lost in five sets to Alcaraz in the semi-finals.

Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last five major titles between them, with Novak Djokovic the last man outside the duo to secure a Grand Slam.

During a TNT Sports event attended by Tennis365, Courier backed Alcaraz and Sinner to continue to dominate.

“We came out of the era of the Big Three, the Big Four, and this is now for me, this is the era of the ‘New Two’, this is who these guys are,”

“They’ve won the last five majors and they’ve clearly shown that there’s separation there at the highest level, right?

“We were wondering at the start of this clay-court season, it certainly felt wide open ‘cause Sinner was still serving a suspension, Alcaraz had played at times brilliantly, but also inconsistently this season. And the clay-court season has kind of shut that door again.

“Madrid was wide open with neither of them there, you have Casper [Ruud] come through and Jack Draper made the final, but then Rome, they both show back up and I think it’s pretty clear that there’s a big gap between them and the rest of the field, at least on clay.

“Maybe on some other surfaces that could tighten, but I doubt it. So for me, this is the ‘New Two’, we’re really in the early innings of it. If they’re healthy, it looks like they’re gonna be dominant for a long time.”
