James Tarkowski has started every Premier League game Everton have played since he signed for the club in the summer of 2022 when his contract at Burnley expired.

That’s a sequence of 109 matches, but with the 32-year-old going off with a hamstring injury against Manchester City last Saturday, that long run is now set to come to an end.

The Mancunian hasn’t just been a tower of strength at the back for the Blues, with club captain Seamus Coleman’s outings been few and far between of late, he’s also been skippering the side for long periods.

Tarkowski has kept up his record of playing more than 30 Premier League fixtures for eight seasons on the run but after this setback, it looks like his race is run for this term.

Everton are soon set to say goodbye to Goodison Park as the Toffees play out their final few matches in their iconic home before moving to their incredible new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Moyes must now decide who to put alongside Everton’s most valuable player Jarrad Branthwaite.

Last weekend, the Blues boss chose a switch that would cause the least disruption to the back four by bringing on Tarkowski’s former Burnley team-mate Michael Keane but having been brought in from the cold, he struggled against the reigning Premier League champions, with Pep Guardiola’s side netting two late goals to snatch victory.

As well as Jake O’Brien has done as a makeshift right-back since Moyes brought him into the side, filling in effectively as a square peg in a round hole, many would now like to see the Republic of Ireland international moved into his natural position at centre-back.

At 6ft 6in, alongside the 6ft 5in Branthwaite, it would be one of the most-towering partnerships in Everton history and with Coleman, Nathan Patterson and Ashley Young all unused substitutes against Manchester City, it’s not like the Blues don’t have alternative options at right-back.

An attacking talisman

Broja has never scored a goal for Everton and the same goes for Youssef Chermiti, who has spent even lengthier spells on the treatment table this term.

Beto, who netted five times in four games during a purple patch in February, appears favourite to lead the line in west London but the goals have dried up for him and for all the questions that his unpredictable approach brings against opposition defences, doubts persist as to whether he is polished enough to be a long-term solution.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s time on Merseyside looks set to end when his contract expires this summer, so Moyes may well have to search beyond his current options when it comes to spearheading the Blues attack going forward. Liam Delap – heading to Goodison Park with Ipswich Town for Goodison Park’s penultimate fixture – looks like an enticing prospect for many Premier League clubs and Everton’s pitch could revolve around making him their main man as they move into their new stadium, while there have also been reports that Moyes would back himself to revived the career of former Brighton & Hove Albion wonderkid Evan Ferguson, currently on loan at West Ham United.
