Daniel Farke is back on top of the Championship and eyeing his third title at this level as Leeds United secured a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough – and Russell Martin has discussed his old Norwich City boss.

Martin was a thorn in Farke’s side last season as he guided Southampton to three wins over Farke’s side, twice in the league and then the crucial victory in the play-off final at Wembley, securing a 1-0 Saints win.

A game in which Joe Rothwell sat on the bench for Southampton.

Martin got Southampton back into the Premier League at the first attempt after taking the Saints job having done well at MK Dons and Swansea.

But Martin tried to continue his expansive, possession-based style of football in the Premier League and it didn’t work.

Martin was sacked in December and Southampton’s relegation has already been confirmed.

Martin appeared on the latest The Rest Is Football podcast in which he spoke to Gary Lineker in an in-depth interview at Lineker’s house.

Martin remains out of work, claiming he has rejected some offers.

He discussed Farke and how he beat the German but is now out of work, while Farke remains in a job and the injustice of that.

Martin also said if he thinks Leeds will be promoted come the end of the season.

“Daniel is still in a job now and he’s been a manager a lot longer than me.

We beat them in the final but actually he stayed in the job and is still in the job, and will probably get promoted this year,” he said.

Why Martin’s comparison with Leeds boss Farke is short-sighted

Yes, Martin beat Farke and yes, he probably deserved a bit more time as Southampton manager given he got them promoted in his first season especially, in a difficult season with Leicester and Ipswich flying.

But Martin has forgotten that his stubbornness to adapt to the quality of the Premier League is the reason why Southampton had to take action.

It was naive to think Southampton could outplay England’s best.

Farke was always going to be given a second year and certainly, if the German does not get Leeds into the Premier League this season, he will be sacked.

If Leeds do go up, you would expect Farke to adapt.
